Choi implanter or pen method, DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) method, which is commonly used in our country, refers the same technique for hair transplantation and it is also known as unshaven hair transplantation. Choi pen technique is a special device which was produced in pen shape bringing innovation to hair transplant and facilitating especially moustache and beard transplant. The DHI technique is considered to be a separate technique in hair transplantation because the hair removal stage from the donor site is the same as the FUE technique but includes a different transplant stage than FUE . The DHI technique can be simply described as the method in which both hair removal and hair transplantation stages occur simultaneously.
With sedative drugs which are applied by our anesthesiologist, can be adjusted individually and its effect can be scaled accordingly; patient's all reflexes are protected, even local anesthesia procedures are not felt before the hair transplant procedure; so, hair transplant can be performed with zero pain by CHOI Pen Technique. Sedation is so safe that it can be used even in small children but hair transplant can be done without sedation for patients who do not prefer; at this point, the choice belongs to you.
In hair transplant which is done with Choi Pen Technique, hair follicles taken from donor area are placed into Choi pen one by one and given to hair transplant specialist after each hair follicle is placed. In the second stage, hair follicles collected from donor area are planted with the pushing feature of the needle according to the direction of the previous hair by the 40-45 degree angles. According to the hair root and hair thickness of the patient, the tips of the Choi pens can have different sizes. In a hair transplantation operation, 2 to 6 Choi pen and an average of 15-16 choi tip are used.
Choi Pen Technique has various advantages and disadvantages compared to FUE method. The advantages of Choi Pen Technique are;
1- Since hair follicles stay out of the tissue for a shorter time, transplant is performed in a healthier way.
2- The hair follicles taken from the donor area have a higher survival rate
3- The risk of bleeding is lower since the donor area will be smaller.
4- Recovery period after hair transplant is shorter, so that the patient can return to his / her daily life in a shorter time.
5- This method is more suitable for unshaved hair transplant.
If we mention the disadvantages of Choi Pen Technique, the disadvantages compared to FUE method are as follows;
1- In order to use this technique in a good way, both the doctor and his / her team must undergo a very long training period.
2- Because of the pencils and tips compared to other hair transplant methods, it is more expensive procedure.
3 -The person who will carry out the transplant process should be careful and physically strong.
4- Planting on a hairy area means that the transplant area is very narrow and if the physician does not have sufficient experience, s/he may damage other hair follicles while working on this narrow area.
For this technique which was first applied in Korea, experts used to think that it is quite difficult and not appropriate for every patient; but in further studies, it was figured out that this method can be applied for all hair types by producing suitable implanter pencils.
